We arrived in Solomons Islands on Saturday and were immediately greeted by fellow sailors, Jay & Imi, whom we met back in Atlantic Highlands (Sandy Hook). It didn't take long for the four of us to gather around a good glass of wine and yummie appetizers in their warm and welcoming sailboat. This happy hour amongst new friends set the tone for what would be our short but pleasant stay in this charming bay.
According to the Waterway Guide of the Chesapeake Bay, Solomons Island has developed since the 70s into on one of the Chesapeake's top destinations for boaters. This proved right just by the sheer amount of boats surrounding us. I think there are more boats then people and houses put together in Solomons.
We didn't much tour the area except for a short walk along the river as there isn't much to see despite what the lady at the Tourist Center told us. However we had a nice surprise on Sunday afternoon, when we saw a couple of sailboats from Montreal anchor next to us. Even though we didn't know any of them, we warmingly invited everyone aboard for drinks and quickly became friends with Nicole & Yves and Monique & Sylvain, all of them heading toward warmer climates. Andre had met Yves last winter when both of them took a class in fiberglass maintenance. We also ran into Jean-Pierre, who cruises solo on his beautiful and well equipped saiboat NOA. He's heading for Cuba for the winter. It was fun to spend the evening sharing our stories and mostly all agreeing that it's important to enjoy every minute of our trip.
We are leaving tomorrow for Deltaville for a short rest before planning our arrival in Hampton for Thursday.
